ReWire is Here!

Dear fellow meditators,

One of my students, Mike Redmer, just came out with a really cool app that makes my "Just Note Gone" technique into a video game!  Check it out here: http://www.rewireapp.com/.  And if you feel like it, give him feedback as to what works and doesn't work about it.  Apropos of that technique, an article by me on "The Power of Gone" should be appearing in the upcoming August edition of Tricycle magazine.

And speaking of August, this year's Buddhist Geeks conference will be livestreamed for free!  Way to go geek team!

Take a look at what Mike had to say about ReWire:

  6. This looks great, I can't wait to download it!

I am curious about your thoughts on the effects of internet browsing on a person's ability to develop concentration power. I spend a lot of time on the internet, and am constantly switching between tabs and articles without fully finishing reading them or engaging with them. For the past 2 months I have meditated for 45 minutes each day counting my breath, trying to become as focused as possible, gently bringing my attention back to the breath whenever it wavers.

Is the way I use the internet potentially slowing or even nullifying my progress at developing concentration?

    Thank you Shinzen,

    Johnny

    1. Johnny -- I do exactly the same thing and notice the same effect. I have many tabs open at once and can't seem to read one from beginning to end. Rather, I flit back and forth and like you, don't engage and don't retain much. I'm hoping this app will help me retrain my focus. Perhaps I should disable tabbed browsing. ;-)

    2. Unfortunately, I don't have enough data to make an informed response to your question or even a wild guess. But I can say this, even if a person encounters factors that militate against concentration power (such as aging, medications, physical pain, and so forth), with sufficient formal practice, those inhibiting factors can be adequately overcome. So the one thing I can say for sure is keep up your practice.

  7. I appreciate the candor regarding your lack of data to give an empirically informed answer to my question. That's why I follow your stuff so closely!

However, much like Kaishin said, if I had to guess based on my own experience without the benefit of objective scientific analysis I would say that at best unfocused tabbed browsing doesn't help my concentration development and at worst hinders it. Therefore to be on the safe side I've decided to start following a '3 tab' policy... if I notice myself with more than 3 tabs open at one time, I'll close all of them and start over.

Keep up the great work my friend.

    Johnny
